Past Glory
1995-1996
The next year, 1995-6, saw the exit of the three players
who had forged the Valencia dynasty. But rather than rebuild, the Matadors
reloaded. Dual-enrolled high-school senior Brittanicus "Britt" Crawford,
son of a Valencia professor, sparked a team consisting also of captain
Joe Locey, Chris Connelly, and Neil Gainey. Again Valencia sent two
teams to the state championship, the second team comprising captain
Joe McCahill, Fred "the Nigerian Nightmare" Mawudzro, Kirby Ramlackman,
Nathan Hyatt, and Kenel Morancy. The "A" team (the first listed above)
mowed through the competition during the round-robin portion of the
state tournament, losing only to hated rivals on Valencia's "B" team.
Thus it was a shocking upset when they narrowly lost in the state final
to Central Florida C. C., whom they had soundly beaten in the round
robin.
