Past Glory - The (Late) Twentieth Century
1993-1994
In 1993-4, Valencia won its first Florida Community
College Activities Association (FCCAA) state championship, beating Broward
Community College (which had won the previous six titles). That team,
consisting of captain Laura Quinton, Stephen Weichsel, Cory Edwards,
Kim Gessner, and John Varner, was viciously competitive with other teams
and each other, which drove them to improve rapidly throughout the year.
They capped the year by winning the Berry Invitational at Berry College
in Rome, Georgia, beating teams from around the southeast, and showing
their ability to handle longer four-year college questions as well as
the shorter state of Florida questions.
